In 2007, The Journal News developed a blog program that is one of the most ambitious in the larger newspaper business. We currently have 65 active blogs, and are adding (and subtracting) new ones each day. Our blogs generate upwards of 2 million hits per month, making them some of the most high-traffic parts of our larger website, LoHud.com. In the past year, we completed our move to WordPress (one of the most versatile, open-source blogging platforms); created a group of Power Users made up of traditional newsroom reporters to help with troubleshooting and innovation; launched 10 new podcasts through iTunes; and added numerous bells and whistles, including email subscriptions, social bookmarking, maps, video, and more. Just as important, Our Power Users helped the blogs to begin generating revenue via Google’s AdSense program. And then late in the year, we worked hand in hand with our sales staff to begin offering sponsorships ranging from $1,000 to $3,500 per month. The response has been tremendous, and blogs have now become part of our larger sales efforts. In 2008 we expect that the numbers (page views, visitors, comments, revenue) will keep rising and that our blogs will become an important profit center for The Journal News.
